Managing electric vehicle (EV) fleets brings new challenges, especially when it comes to estimating and reimbursing energy for home charging sessions. For many fleet managers, the complexity of tracking home charging can be a significant hurdle.

The challenge of home charging data

When EV drivers charge their vehicles at home, getting accurate energy data can be tricky. Here’s why:

  • Utility bill complications: The energy used for charging is mixed in with the rest of the household’s electricity use, making it hard to isolate the charging costs.

  • Variable energy prices: All electrons are not priced equally. It’s difficult to calculate the exact price at which every charge session was done.

  • Other household electric vehicles: If your partner is also using the same charger, your charger won’t identify which sessions should and shouldn’t be reimbursed.

  • Charger connectivity issues: Many home chargers are not connected to the internet, meaning the data from each charging session isn’t automatically available.

  • Lack of centralized data: Without a system to collect all the charging information in one place, it’s hard to track energy use for multiple drivers in a fleet.

A solution - using vehicle data

By directly accessing information from the EVs themselves, it is possible to:

  • Accurately track charging sessions, regardless of charger connectivity

  • Centralize data collection for entire fleets

  • Isolate EV charging energy from overall household consumption

At Guided Energy, we specialize in gathering vehicle data in a way that respects privacy, helping to estimate home charging energy more precisely. This means fleet managers can get accurate information without relying on internet-connected chargers or manual data collection.

The energy loss between the charger and the vehicle

However, what a charger pulls from the grid and what a vehicle actually receives aren't the same. During the charging process, some energy is lost—typically between 5% and 15%. This difference, known as deperdition, occurs because some energy is lost as heat.

The amount of energy lost can depend on charging speed, external temperature, and vehicle model.

By correlating vehicle data with charging information on anonymized data gathered from multiple fleets, we can accurately estimate the energy received by the vehicle during home charging sessions. This approach allows us to model for the energy loss between the charger and the vehicle, ensuring precise calculations for reimbursement purposes.

Accurate reimbursement, made easy

Fleet managers using Guided Energy’s tools can rest assured that home charging sessions are accurately tracked and reimbursed. There’s no need to worry about the technicalities of energy loss—our system handles it all, providing a seamless solution for managing electric fleets.

With Guided Energy, you can focus on the big picture, while we handle the details to ensure drivers are fairly compensated for their home charging, all without the hassle of manual calculations or guesswork.
